well, last week's choice artists of the week, on www.axisweb.org. The curatorial team at Axis (the online resource for contemporary art) chose me as one of two artists for the position from their 2000 strong profile directory.

what a privilege and great big compliment! I'm only sorry that I didn't brag about it sooner...

my first ever solo show

Smotherland

A solo exhibition by Alison Erika Forde

Alison Erika Forde, 'them bones', 2010, acrylic and emulsion on board, 50cm x 50cm. Courtesy the artist and The International 3

PRIVATE VIEW : THURSDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER 6pm – 8pm
Exhibition Continues: Friday 24th September – Sunday 31st October.
Opening Times: Weds – Sat 12pm – 5pm and Sunday 31st October 12pm-5pm

The International 3 is pleased to announce Smotherland, Alison Erika Forde’s first solo exhibition.

Forde draws on her dreams and memories of past experiences to produce fantastical images that acknowledge the capacity of daydream to allow us to consider the complexity of the everyday. Her imagery and illustrative style is influenced as much by graphic novels, comic strips, street art and kitsch as it is by fine art’s history and whilst initial viewing suggests a disarming playfulness, her work is imbued with a vital mischief and dark humour. Wide-eyed characters frequently face impending doom and uncomfortable scenarios are enacted on the picture’s periphery.

Moving away from a previously exclusive use of 2D, Smotherland will see Forde expanding this charmingly malevolent world to encompass 3D. Giant painted figures will provide a menacing backdrop to a group of intricately painted wooden peg people and a new collection of paintings on charity shop sourced pictures and donated second hand materials.

Smotherland will be accompanied by texts written by freelance curator Bryony Bond and D.I.Y craftster and writer Seleena Daye.

- being referred to as Forde never fails to amuse me

business cat in barcelona

On a recent business trip to Barcelona to view a gallery space, i saw alot of things i liked. The place is rife with 1960s/70s fonts, graphics and tiles, the buildings all have stunning balconies and brick work, even the floor tiles are intricate!!! here are a few of the little gems...

...it was a super ace surprise to see my work was in the company of MISS VAN paintings in the SWAB art fair there. yay! However, the Gaudi architecture was the most beautiful thing to lay eyes on. deep sea coral castle fairytale buildings, swoon...

things to make me go WOOOOOO

Day out to Heaton Park with a top bud, where we saw mystical creatures straight out of 'Where the Wild Things Are' and Mark Ryden's Snow Yak paintings. Climbing trees and then lounging in them. Crabbies alcoholic ginger beer. Hunx and the Punkettes! Partying like it was 1999. I Wonder what ideas i'll get from all that 'research' - joy!!!

things to make me go grrrr

'Afromodern' is the official best ever exhibition i have seen, currently running at Liverpool Tate for another week, featuring work by two of my Favourite artists, Kara Walker and Ellen Gallagher.

To coincide with the show, Ellen Gallagher was partaking in an artist's talk, which excited me a great deal i can tell you! HOWEVER when i turned up on the day, i was informed that the limited tickets had sold out and i wasn't going to get to see one of my idols, sigh. This upset me for number of reasons. Firstly the tickets being £8 each, secondly them being of limited availability. I find that by charging that price, it immediately excluded a section of the potential audience who would have greatly benefited hearing from such an inspirational figure, and that by restricting the numbers in such a way, fans were unnecessarily denied access, whilst reinforcing the notion of an exclusive art club. Instead of aiming at an audience of young aspiring artists, it sadly made my presence feel unwanted there.

After missing a ONCE IN A LIFETIME chance to see an idol, i comforted myself with a constellation prize of going for a ride on the carousel in Liverpool town centre. This plan was also foiled, the carousel had already CLOSED. hoping that my buddy could cheer me up we went for drinks. Feelin peckish we fancied some noodles. they were sold out. this wasn't too bad until we fancied cider, this was sold out, beer, sold out, white wine SOLD OUT. my friend finally managed to choose a tipple still available, only to be greeted by a little fly who had already beaten him to it, swimming in his glass. To top that day off i missed my last train home, which was at 11 o'clock, don't even get me started on how lame public transport is.
TISK.

too many sweets - the big reveal

These are my puppetios, they are spearheading a new direction away from the solely 2D format and i'm very excited to have the freedom to make things like this and beyond. They had their debut at Volta NY and there will be much more to come...

Volta New Yoik

New paintings 'sharkeye' and 'shiteye' aswell as installation views from the Volta NY art fair in Manhattan. Wheww that was an experience i tell yer. note the little child that was screaming all around the fair, and would only stop crying when he saw my paintings, obviously a big fan of headless dogs and ting!!!
